pale blue, the duo of elizabeth wight and mike simonetti, released their debut album too much critical acclaim back in 2015. they come together once again with their latest ep you stopped dying due to drop on crosstown rebels in february. the you stopped dying ep takes influence from shoegaze groups like slowdive and my bloody valentine and moves it to the dance floor. the result is a strange hybrid that some have called technogaze. this would never work if liz wasnt such a strong vocalist. her amazing vocal range makes it easy. mike simonetti pale blue is a hypnotic affair, the driving bass sitting perfectly under wight’s powerful yet ethereal vocals. daughter of babylon takes the record into heavier techno territory with its thudding bass and wights breathy vocals delicately layered over the top. on the flip side love is an unapologetically industrial number with screeching synths that echo around wights vocals. simonetti and wight have each earned their musical stripes in their own rights. simonetti founded the hugely popular italians do it better as well as his own successful record label, 2mr. he’s released a slew of records on highly regarded imprints such as me me me, correspondant and public release, and enjoys a fruitful career as a touring dj, which shows no sign of abating. wight has previously lent her exhilarating vocals to the west coast band, silver hands of which she was once one half

seth troxler’s play it say it label opens up 2018 with another release from the highly regarded ataxia, who serve up their third ep for the imprint. the detroit duo impressed with their previous outings on the label, the supertouch ep back in july 2017 and the acid ep in 2016. since then they have also released on leftroom and nervous and continued their eight year residency at prominent detroit venue tv lounge. their fresh take on motor city techno often comes with flashes of acid and makes cyber punks ted krisko and eric ricker one of the most interesting pairs in the game. opening up the essential ep is ‘quicksand’, an immediately arresting and busy electro track with real machine soul. the bassline bubbles and boils underneath crisp percussion and emotive keys bring a sense of tenderness. it’s a macho cut with robust drums and is sure to win over any crowd. the fresh ‘hot snakes’ is a deep, menacing track with dark bass gurgling beneath the airy hi hats. frazzled synths are dystopian and brain frying, and together the whole thing takes you into hypnotic territory with an intense sense of urgency that is impossible to ignore. last of all is the freakiest of the lot. the brilliant ‘texas is the reason’ has circling bass that is warped and intriguing and will own any club, while the drums drive on and trippy keys are skewed and twisted up top. it’s a truly intense record for late in the night that is sure to become a big tune. this is an expressive and varied ep full of contemporary and innovative detroit house and techno sounds and marks another step in the ataxia story.

phantasm is a new vinyl label and collaboration between amsterdam s sinchi collective and the much-admired night noise outlet, based in geneva. it kicks off with a strong ep from the soviet union aka richard baldwin, including classy remixes from sinchi themselves and in flagranti. baldwin has a signature style that is cinematic and synth heavy and has been formed over the last decade plus. a fine dj, experienced promoter and self-confessed addict of vintage analogue synthesizers and drum machines, richard pulls his influences from early electronica, 80s film-scores, and shades of techno right up to the present day. this track was first written on a cold evening in december 2010 using a roland tr707 and jx8p synth. after collaborating with his songwriting partner the track was given a haunting vocal and released as the disappearance of becky sharp , while the original remained on baldwin s soundcloud and got id requests from all over the world. 7 years later it comes back to life in the form of its original instrumental, with a 2017 rework, plus remixes by sinchi and in flagranti.

the seventh 7-inch in most excellent unlimiteds series of mr. k edits combines a pair of lush midtempo modern soul gems, with both sides textbook candidates for a perfect set-opener. “live in me,” from rufus and chaka khan’s 1979 masterjam lp, was never released as a single, but that didn’t stop it from becoming a fan favorite and warm-up classic for soulful djs. composed and produced by the legendary rod temperton and quincy jones, who were fresh off the completion mj’s off the wall when this was recorded, “live in me” is judiciously extended here by danny krivit without losing any of the graceful magic of the original. philly jazz-funkers pieces of a dream get another respectful krivit extension on the flip side, with their gorgeous “warm weather.” written by maestro dexter wansel and featuring barbara walker on lead vocals, the laid-back pulse of this smooth ‘81rare groove mainstay has never fallen out of favor with djs who understand the power of gentle persuasion.

house heaven on 12-inch. a lofty description, but one that fits most excellent unlimited’s latest offering perfectly. in 1990, boy george and simon rogers (the fall) made a record called “generations of love” for george’s post-culture club project, jesus loves you. legendary nyc dj and producer bruce forest was one of several big names brought in to do a set of remixes, and the better days veteran got to work on several contrasting versions of the cut. the mixes heard here, done at london’s famed olympic studios, are slices of utter ecstasy for anyone who has a taste for ‘90s deep house euphoria and ambient dancefloor excursions, but were unfortunately lost amongst the countless alternate mixes. suffice to say, meu is taking matters into our own hands and has remastered and properly packaged these tracks, directly sourced from forest himself, with the full intention to give this erstwhile dollar-record the respect it deserves. the jazz mix opens with a winding piano solo by andy whitmore (spandau ballet, terence trent d’arby, soul ii soul) that lures the listener into a hypnotic groove that could quite comfortably go on forever but here is constrained by our modesty and the 12-inch format. (a tip for the adventurous dj: flipped to 33rpm the tune becomes an epic balearic chugger, a late-night psylocibic alternative for the heads.) the synth-heavy sounds of the ambient mix on the flip side harken back to the chill-out rooms of the ‘90s but twenty-some years later bring the best kind of vintage charm.

tardis records are delighted to welcome uk tech-house hero flow to the tardis records stable for their eighth release. the three tracks making up the trine ep were recorded together with simon moorecroft (a.k.a. simon vinyl junkie) around the time of his first vinyl releases back in 1996-1997. all three tracks sound completely contemporary whilst having more than enough old school flavour to give flashbacks to any 90s ravers. lead track boy girl action has skipping, garage-influenced beats with rolling bass and swirling atmospherics, whilst a breakbeat, vocals and a stabby intro give trine on the flip a more ravey feel. closing out the ep, i see you is the dubbiest cut here, with another heavy bassline, cut-up vocals,and subtly swung percussion. eli and oscar have loved testing these tracks out on the road and can vouch for their impact on a peak-time dancefloor!

mit hitsingles wie -get a life-, -back home- und -sky and sand- (mit seinem bruder paul) hat fritz kalkbrenner in den letzten jahren unser modernes verständnis von elektronischer musik mitgeprägt. nach vier erfolgreichen alben, von denen die letzten beiden die top 10 der deutschen albumcharts erreichten, wendet er seinen musikalischen blick in eine andere richtung. es geht hier um elektronische musik, wie sie fritz kalkbrenner in seiner jugendlichen sozialisierung in den bis heute legendären techno- und houseclubs der hauptstadt in den neunziger jahren kennengelernt hat. die zäsur, des weglassens der so vertraut gewordenen bariton stimme öffnet die tür in die weite welt elektronischer musik, die sowohl für das homelistening, als auch für den clubeinsatz taugt. es gibt auf diesen 12 tracks keine konventionen und manchmal auch kein halten mehr, fritz kalkbrenner lässt sich gehen in der faszination für dub techno, für klare dominante housestrukturen oder auch in feinen hymnischen melodien die aus so manchem titel des neuen albums herausscheinen.

4 years can feel like a really long time – -long time no see- was achim maerz frst wake up! ep back in 2013, -it s been a while- is his frst track on metal and machines and it s good to see that some things don t change. it s a true achim maerz track – focused on longing melodies, warmly distorted harmonies based on deep house foundations. -listening to machines- features a kickdrum like a steam hammer in factory hall. for the right mind, even a factory can be an inspiring place. benjamin brunn s -iron copper gold- follows his manner of creating timeless and eternal soundscapes. it is less playful and takes the tension to higher grounds. just like metal, it s cold being touched and it doesn t take long until it reaches body temperature. the fourth track express mode- was released on benjamin brunns drop lp in 2015. achim maerz remix sounds like a screwed-down uptempo house track – slow and heavy, but benjamin brunn s quirkiness is undeniably there.

ant orange’s third 12″, for karaoke kalk forms something resembling a trilogy for the label. “right there” is built on a familiar rhodes-n-bass aesthetic, combining the lo-fi jazz of 2017’s “arkupe” with the soulful vocal motifs of 2015’s “s/t”, while introducing more electronic ingredients and taking an increasingly exploratory approach to rhythm and composition. the opening title track clocks in at over 8 minutes, growing slowly from soft tickled keys to a full-bodied groove circled by airy synths and fragmented rnb vocals. “drunk in the trunk” then shifts down a gear, looping another vocal cut over a lazy, stripped-back wahwah vibe. side a closes with experimental jazz skit “let that sink in”, its jerky tempo and flashes of light reminiscent of a late-night subway ride. the b-side takes a more contemplative tone, with the meditative arpeggios and sparse drums of “comfort zone” leading into the dusky west coast stroll of “muscle beach”, before “rudis goes offline” picks up the tempo for a last shimmering dance. the closing track “a frozen lake” sounds just like it sounds – chilled by name and by nature.
